Although it appears to be floating on the Mediterranean, Maiden’s Castle sits on a tiny island off the coast of Kizkalesi, Turkey. The structure dates back to the 12th century, but no one knows who constructed the ancient relic. Many tell a legend, however, involving a Byzantine king, his daughter and a fortune teller’s frightening prediction. Why Parents Should Play Video Games With Their Kids Why Parents Should Play Video Games With Their Kids

Many parents think of video games as either a total waste of time, or an activity for their kids to pursue on their own. But Dr. Sinem Siyahhan encourages parents to play video games with their kids. An associate professor at California State University specializing in education technology and learning sciences, the educator says it’s a great way to bond. Alienware recently provided Dr. Siyahhan with gaming laptops for her Play2Connect project. She set them up in a classroom and invited families to play Minecraft. Not all of the parents were up to speed on the game, but that wasn’t a problem. Their kids were happy to teach them. We all became acutely aware of the dangers of plastic pollution in 2015, when a video of marine biologist Nathan Robinson pulling an entire plastic straw out of a sea turtle’s nose began to circulate. Today, Robinson is studying green sea turtles off the coast of the Bahamian island of Eleuthera, relying on TurtleCams. The devices are mounted on the backs of turtles. They provide a turtle’s-eye view of how these endangered animals live and the threats they face. In this episode of “Mission Wild,” Wes Larson dives into the project, channeling his inner Michael Phelps to find potential turtle subjects. Patrick Davison is striking out stereotypes about old age in “Balloon Elderly,” a documentary about a slow-pitch softball team in Hongodai, Japan, made up mostly of men over 70. In Davison’s mind, these men embody the definition of the Japanese word ikigai, which roughly translates to “reason for being.” “I was inspired by this idea and how the Balloon Elderly found some of their ikigai in the friendship and camaraderie of the team and in the game of softball,” he says. “They liked winning as much as anyone, but it didn’t seem to be their main motivation. They truly cared about each other, and they tried to make the team a place where everyone was supported through the struggles of aging.” Davison, director of documentary projects and professor of visual communication at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, shot “Balloon Elderly” while he was in Japan as a Fulbright Scholar. He chronicles a season on the field with the Balloon Elderly, following the team through the final round of the Hinohara T

Allan Brauner is a Holocaust researcher. His late mother Margaret Brauner, who lived from 1924 to 2017, was a Holocaust survivor. He discovered her name, the number tattooed on her arm and her signature on a list of female prisoners held at Auschwitz by the Nazis. There are 227 names on the list, and Brauner has made it his personal journey to uncover the stories of all those who experienced the Holocaust alongside his mother. We accompany Brauner as he travels to the Arolsen Archives in Bad Arolsen, Germany in search of information. The largest archives in the world on the victims of Nazi persecution, the institution houses 30 million documents. Ancestry formed a partnership with the Arolsen Archives to make these records widely available and searchable online, for free. “It is more important than ever to show what can happen if these values about solidarity, about equality, about respect are not upheld,” says Floriane Azoulay, the director of the Arolsen Archives. Crafting India’s 120-Foot-Long Snake Boats Crafting India’s 120-Foot-Long Snake Boats

Four hundred years ago, the snake boats of India were warships, used by battling kings along the backwaters of Kerala. Today, the long, canoe-like boats are used exclusively for racing. Reaching up to 120 feet in length, each snake boat can accommodate 100 rowers. In the town of Aranmula, snake boat racing takes on a special significance. The boats are known as Palliyodam and represent the snake upon which Lord Vishnu—the god of protection and preservation—rests. Creating these ornate works involves an intricate process.
